Overseeding

A person is using a spreader to distribute seeds or fertilizer on a lush green lawn, with particles flying out behind it.

Desert Water Agency encourages you to skip overseeding and allow your grass to go gold for the winter. Better yet, take advantage of our grass removal rebate  to help switch to a desert landscape.

Top 5 reasons to skip overseeding:

  1. Doing your part to conserve matters for our community. Overseeding is a water intensive process to get the new seeds to germinate.
  2. Save money! Seed and labor costs are expensive.
  3. Overseeding can stress your lawn so that it doesn’t look as nice next season.
  4. Less mowing or scalping means less dust and particles in the air, which will improve air quality.
  5. Going gold is the sustainable choice.

If you're still not convinced and plan to overseed, please do it efficiently. Some quick tips for this include:

  • Start later - put seed down between mid-October and mid-November. This allows you to use less water to germinate.
  • Check your sprinklers - Turn sprinklers on to make sure they are spraying the correct area. Repair any breaks in your system. Too much water can prevent germination.
  • Water efficiently - Seeds should be moist but not soaked. Water little and often, and avoid daylight hours to lessen evaporation. Reduce irrigation frequency after seed sprouts.
